The ousted president of French Polynesia Oscar Temaru (R) gives a press conference 26 October 2004 in Papeete with members of his former cabinet Nicole Bouteau (2nd R) and Philip Schyle (2nd L). Temaru started a hunger strike yesterday in protest at his controversial ejection from office last weekend. Pro-independence leader Temaru said he and his ousted ministers would go on hunger strike immediately after the government was voted from power by parliament on Friday. Temaru was replaced as leader of the French territory after just over three months in power by long-serving former ruler Gaston Flosse, a loyal ally of French President Jacques Chirac.
