CZECH-VELVET REVOLUTION-HAVEL
CZECH REPUBLIC OUT
Former Czech President Vaclav Havel chats 17 November 2004 with Livia Klausova, the wife of Czech President Vaclav Klaus at the Chamber of Deputies in Prague commemorating the 15th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution, which started 17 November 1989. Klaus addressing the parliament said he is against viewing the Communist past with over-simplification and that Communism had been an indelible part of the Czech national history and therefore constitutes part of Czech identity. He added that the best way towards coming to terms with the Communist era leads via a "positive today" and via the building of a society that will not allow the emergence of similar regimes. On the other hand, Havel said that the days in November 1989, which led to the fall of Communism in then Czechoslovakia, were full of hope as well as reflections on the past. Without reflecting on the past, no view in the future would have sense, added Havel. AFP PHOTO-MAFA/DAN MATERNA
