(FILES) This 17 August, 2000 file photo shows NAACP President Kweisi Mfume speaking to the Democratic National Convention at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. A spokesman for the NAACP announced 30 November, 2004 that Mfume, 56, is stepping down as the head of the nation-s oldest and largest civil rights group. The organization-s legal counsel, Dennis Hayes, will serve as interim president while a national search is conducted.
