US-CHRISTMAS-DECORATIONS
AS CHRISTMAS NEARS, ARMY OF INFLATABLE SANTAS POPS UP ACROSS US LANDSCAPE: Nita Whitesel, founder of the year-round Christmas decoration store called "The Christmas Store" in Alexandria, Virginia, stands by a large "Nutcracker" statue in her store filled with thousands of Christmas ornaments and decorations. Whitesel sells Yuletide decorations all year round, but in December, business goes through the roof, and sales at her three Washington area stores multiply by a factor of 10. In her Alexandria, Virginia store, which resembles a Christmas grotto, customers can buy small handblown-glass ornaments for their Christmas trees or quaint miniature model houses for around 200 USD. "Many people keep Christmas decorations in their houses all year round. People collect these items -- you-d be surprised," Whitesel said, adding: "What-s old is new again, especially ornaments from the late 1940s and early 1950s." She first set up shop in 1970 with 5,000 USD on the second floor of her home and now claims to sell several million dollars- worth of goods annually. AFP Photo/Paul J. RICHARDS
