CZECH-SENATE-CHAIRMAN
CZECH REPUBLIC OUT
Premysl Sobotka from the opposition Civic Democratic Party (ODS), presently the strongest party in the upper house of Parliament, smiles 15 December 2004 in Prague after he became the new chairman of the Senate, receiving in a secret ballot 55 votes from the 80 senators present. Sobotka replaces Petr Pithart (KDU-CSL), who decided not to run again for the post in light of the results of the November Senate elections. Along with Sobotka-s 35 counterparts from the ODS, he was evidently supported as well by senators from the government Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL) and Social Democrats (CSSD). Sobotka said he "wants to show that the Senate is reworking and has its own position on legislative matters." AFP PHOTO/MAFA-MICHAL SVACEK
