SENEGAL-CASAMANCE-PEACE
Miltants of the Movement of Democratic Forces in Casamance (MFDC) smiles for photographers upon their arrival in Ziguinchor-s high school 29 December 2004, where delegations from all over Casamance are set to attend the signing of a peace deal. After more than two decades of struggle for independence from Senegal, Casamance separatist leader Augustin Diamacoune Senghor is set 30 December to sign a peace deal that will mark the end of his time in the spotlight. A polarizing figure even within his Movement of Democratic Forces in Casamance (MFDC), which dumped him in September in place of a rival, Diamacoune has embraced his role as the emblem for the struggle of the Diola people against their marginalization by the majority Wolof in the west African state.
