SENEGAL-CASAMANCE-PEACE-SENGHOR-NGOM
Casamance separatist leader Augustin Diamacoune Senghor (R), president of the Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC), and Interior Minister Ousmane Ngom pose for photographers after the signature of the peace pact 30 December 2004 in Ziguinchor. Senegal-s government and separatist rebels signed a peace pact Thursday amid pomp and ceremony to end decades of conflict in the southern Casamance region, despite the absence of key factions of the movement that has waged a struggle for independence. The pact was signed by Interior Minister Ousmane Ngom on behalf of the government and Augustin Diamacoune Senghor, the 77-year-old priest whose name is synonymous with the 22-year struggle of the Diola people against their marginalization by the Wolof, the west African state-s largest ethnic group.
