SENEGAL-CASAMANCE-PEACE-SENGHOR
Casamance separatist leader Augustin Diamacoune Senghor (R), president of the Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC), poses for photographers after the signature of a peace pact with Senegalese Interior Minister Ousmane Ngom 30 December 2004 in Ziguinchor. Senegal-s government and separatist rebels signed a peace pact Thursday amid pomp and ceremony to end decades of conflict in the southern Casamance region, despite the absence of key factions of the movement that has waged a struggle for independence. The pact was signed by Interior Minister Ousmane Ngom on behalf of the government and Augustin Diamacoune Senghor, the 77-year-old priest whose name is synonymous with the 22-year struggle of the Diola people against their marginalization by the Wolof, the west African state-s largest ethnic group.
