IRAQ-HAJJ-MOUNT ARAFAT
Muslim pilgrims ascend Mount Arafat as the annual hajj pilgrimage reaches its climax early 19 January 2005. Nearly two million faithful from across the globe spent the night in a city of tents in a valley close to Mecca before heading to Mount Arafat at dawn. After performing the ritual symbolizing the Last Judgement on the mount, the pilgrims will return to the holy city of Mecca tomorrow, the first day of Eid al-Adha, or Feast of the Sacrifice during which most will sacrifice an animal, generally a sheep, in remembrance of Abraham-s readiness to sacrifice his son to God.
