IRAQ-HAJJ-MOUNT ARAFAT
A Saudi security officer (L) watches over Muslim pilgrims leaving the Mount of Mercy in the plain of Arafat outside Saudi Arabia-s holy city of Mecca as the annual hajj pilgrimage reaches its climax early 19 January 2005. Nearly two million faithful from across the globe spent the night in a city of tents in a valley close to Mecca before heading at dawn to Mount Arafat, the scene of the Prophet Mohammed-s last sermon 14 centuries ago. After performing the ritual symbolizing the Last Judgement on the mount, the pilgrims will return to the Mecca tomorrow, the first day of Eid al-Adha, or Feast of the Sacrifice, during which most will sacrifice an animal, generally a sheep, in remembrance of Abraham-s readiness to sacrifice his son to God.
