US-INAUGURATION-SECURITY

John Ford of the Capital Police stands guard before the US Capitol 19 January 2005 in Washington, DC. US President George W. Bush-s 20 January 2005 inauguration will be held under heavy security with searches of people trying to catch a glimpse of Bush-s limousine and the closure of several Washington streets. Sharpshooters will be positioned along the path used by the presidential motorcade while the windows of buildings along Pennsylvania Avenue -- the White House-s address -- will be shut. Public buildings will close and access will be controled. Some 6,000 security officers, including Secret Service members and Washington police, will be mobilized, with bomb-sniffing dogs at check points. Devices will be installed to detect possible chemical, biological or radiological attacks. The Coast Guard will patrol the Potomac river while the Air Force will patrol the skies. Concrete barriers have been installed along three streets to prevent possible car bomb attacks aimed at disrupting a parade that will include 10,000 people. The half-million people expected to attend the ceremony will have to go through searches and metal detectors.
No truck deliveries will be permitted around Congress and the White House. Caterers will have to stock their provisions in the city on the eve of the event. Two metro stations close to the ceremony-s official route will be closed. AFP PHOTO/Robert SULLIVAN
