US-WEATHER-SNOW

A 23 January 2005 photo shows a nearly deserted Westside Highway in New York City after a snowstorm hit the city. Freezing temperatures compounded blizzard-like conditions in parts of the northeastern United States early 23 January as the first major snowstorm of the year clobbered the region. Authorities begged people to stay off the roads as the high winds sent already bone-chilling temperatures below zero, and blowing snow producing whiteout conditions from New York to Maine, bringing normally congested cities to a standstill. Forecasters were promising a record snowfall in Boston, Massachusetts, and up to a meter (three feet) of snow on the Cape Cod peninsula, southeast of Boston. Snow was accumulating at a rate of two inches (five centimeters) per hour in Boston and winds were howling at up to 68 kilometers per hour (42 miles per hour) at the city-s Logan National Airport. "The jackpot will be eastern Massachusetts where 28 to 38 inch amounts are likely," National Weather Service forecasters said. "This is likely to be a record setting snowstorm in Boston when comparing against data dating back to 1892." New York City meanwhile was bracing for up to least 30 centimeters (a foot) of snow.
