SAILING-VENDEE GLOBE-RIOU
French sailor Vincent Riou celebrates victory late 02 February 2005 in the French western port of les Sables-d-Olonne. Riou, sailing PRB, won the fifth Vendee Globe round-the-world race in a new record time. The 33-year-old, taking part in his first Vendee Globe, finished in a time of 87 days, 10 hours, 47 minutes and 55 seconds to beat the previous best of Michel Desjoyeaux who finished in 93 days, 3 hours, 57 minutes and 32 seconds set in the last race in the same boat four years ago. Riou was the races most consistent competitor over the 25,000 miles, proving himself able to withstand the pressure placed on him by the constant attentions of Jean Le Cam (Bonduelle) and Mike Golding (Ecover) who were heading for second and third places.
