CHINA-XINJIANG-MOSQUE
(FILES) This 17 September 2003 photo shows Muslim Uighurs attending afternoon prayers at the IdKah Mosque in Kashgar, in northwest China-s Xinjiang province in Central Asia. The Turkic-speaking Muslim majority and Chinese-speaking Han may live side by side in this strategically important region rich with oil, gas and minerals, but seperatists have been fighting for an independant East Turkestan homeland for the past 150 years. It was for bringing Xinjiang to the attention of the world community that Rebiya Kadeer, a prominent politician and a successful businesswoman who was released from jail 17 March 2005, was arrested in 1999.
