(FILES) -- File picture dated 30 March 1993 shows Cypriot president at the time, Glafcos Clerides (L), then secretary general of the United Nations Boutros Boutros Ghali (C) and Rauf Denktash, the president of self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus(TRNC), during the first round of peace negotiations between the two sides at the UN headquarters in New York. Denktash, 81, became TRNC president in 1983, nine years after the division of Cyprus, following the 1974 Turkish invasion of its northern third in response to an ultranationalist coup fomented by the colonel-s regime, then in power in Athens, and aiming to unite the island with Greece.
