GERMANY-ITALY-BANKING-COMPANY-TAKEOVER-UNICREDIT-HVB

Alessandro Profumo (L), chairman of Italy-s number one bank UniCredito, and Dieter Rampl, chairman of Germany-s second-biggest bank HypoVereinsbank (HVB), shake hands 13 June 2005 in Munich. The two banks unveiled late on Sunday (12 June) the terms of their takeover. The transaction valued HVB alone at 15.4 billion euros (18.6 billion dollars). The multi-billion-euro tie-up between HVB and UniCredit will create a new financial powerhouse in the fast-growing central and eastern European market, even if the cost in terms of job cuts will be high, analysts said.
