GERMANY-ITALY-BANKING-COMPANY-TAKEOVER-UNICREDIT-HVB
Alessandro Profumo, chairman of Italy-s number one bank UniCredito, gives a press conference 13 June 2005 in Munich. UniCredito and Germany-s second-biggest bank HypoVereinsbank (HVB) unveiled late on Sunday (12 June) the terms of their takeover. The transaction valued HVB alone at 15.4 billion euros (18.6 billion dollars). The multi-billion-euro tie-up between HVB and UniCredit will create a new financial powerhouse in the fast-growing central and eastern European market, even if the cost in terms of job cuts will be high, analysts said.
