US-WWII-NUCLEAR-TEST
TO GO WITH AFP STORY "WWII-HISTORY-JAPAN-US-NUCLEAR-BOMBS-TEST-HISTORY" BY MARC LAVINE
Students visit 05 July 2005 Ground Zero at Trinity Site, where the first atomic bomb was tested 60 years ago, at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. A modest stone obelisk marks the spot where the first nuclear explosion, a 19-kiloton plutonium bomb, was detonated 16 July 1945, ushering the world into the atomic age. The test came just three weeks before the US dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima. AFP PHOTO/Robyn BECK
