US-WWII-NUCLEAR-TEST
TO GO WITH AFP STORY "WWII-HISTORY-JAPAN-US-NUCLEAR-BOMBS-TEST-HISTORY" BY MARC LAVINE
Student Allen Yu, from Diamond Bar, CA, shows examples he found of Trinitite, sand which was transformed into a radioactive green glassy substance by the first atomic bomb test sixty years ago, during a visit 05 July 2005 to Trinity Site at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. A modest black volcanic-stone obelisk marks the spot where the 19-kiloton plutonium bomb was detonated 16 July 1945, just three weeks before the US dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima.
