US-VOLCANO-MOUNT ST. HELENS
Rising rockfall plume from Mount St. Helens- dome is seen in this 22 November, 2005 US Geological Survey(USGS) handout image. The cataclysmic eruption on May 18, 1980, blew off the top 1,300 feet of the mountain, flattened thousands of acres of forest and killed 57 people. The current eruption, now in its 15th month, is quiet, as volcanic eruptions go and according to the USGS, growth of the new lava dome inside the crater of Mount St. Helens continues, accompanied by low rates of seismicity, low emissions of steam and volcanic gases, and minor production of ash.
