Former President Oscar Arias (1986-90) of the centrist National Liberation Party (PLN), who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987, strongly leads over his centre-left rival Otton Solis of the Citizens Action Party (PAC) and could win the presidency in the first round. Surveys have given Arias between 41 and 49 percent of public support, while Solis gets only 21-31 percent. AFP PHOTO/Mayela LOPEZ
