CHINA-ENVIRONMENT-WATER
Wu Qugang, 79, works in his field next to a chemical factory near Yixing town in Jiangsu province 16 March 2006. In Yixing, a city of 1.08 million, water pollution in its townships is so severe that the area has received numerous official visits by top party brass including Premier Wen Jiabao. As Wen admitted at the end of the China annual parliamentary session in Beijing last week, the ruling Communist party has allowed the unbridled economic expansion of the last two decades to destroy its environment. But yet amid the heightened party worries that China-s economic growth model is environmentally unsustainable little is being done because both economic interests come first, environmental activists say.
