Fisherman turned environmentalist Zhang Shengyuan, looks at a Yangtze River display by the World Wide Fund for Nature, to mark International Water Day in Shanghai 22 March 2006. Mr Zhang had been fishing in Lake Hong, Hubei Province his entire life but in the past 10 years has witnessed the water become polluted and now over half of lake Hong villagers suffer from all kinds of intestinal diseases. To make a living, Zhang began hunting birds illegally but was caught by rangers. -I was on my way to jail and so I explained my situation to the rangers,- said Zhang, -and incredibly, instead of being jailed, I was offered a job!- Soon after, Zhang put his lifelong knowledge of Lake Hong to use as a reserve ranger.
