IRAQ-UNREST-MINES

A Kurdish teacher explains the dangers of mines to children from the northern village of Sidakan, near the Iranian borders, 08 August 2006. Ten to twelve million different mines that date from Iraqi-Iranian war 1980-1988 are still planted in multiple Kurdish villages, where they cause fatal injuries for the population. Unidentified gunmen ambushed a group of Iraqi mine disposal experts today in the northern town of Kolajo, 180 km south of Sulaimania, triggering a firefight with their armed escorts which left one of the attackers dead, said local government official Sardar Mohammed.
