CHILE-STRIKE-ESCONDIDA MINE
A worker custodies copper sheets while they are taken by train to the port of Antogafasta, 1200 km north of Santiago, Chile, 20 August 2006. The Chilean government Friday stepped into an escalating labor dispute at the world's biggest copper mine after its operator, Anglo-Australian resources giant BHP Billiton, shut operations and broke off negotiations with striking unionized workers. In the second day of negotiations after mediation by Michelle Bachelet´s government, workers and executives of the company got close to a solution Sunday. 2052 workers of Escondida, the main Chilean international provider of copper, have been on strike for 14 days.
