CHILE-STRIKE-ESCONDIDA MINE
A worker passes by posters announcing the strike in the Escondida Mine in Antofagasta, 1200 km north of Santiago, Chile, 20 August 2006. The Chilean government Friday stepped into an escalating labor dispute at the world's biggest copper mine after its operator, Anglo-Australian resources giant BHP Billiton, shut operations and broke off negotiations with striking unionized workers. In the second day of negotiations after mediation by Michelle Bachelet´s government, workers and executives of the company got close to a solution Sunday. 2052 workers have been on strike for 14 days.
