TO GO WITH AFP STORY-IRAQ-TRIAL-SADDAM-KURDS
Kurdish Pashmerga militiamen observe five minutes of silence in respect to the memory of al-Anfal campaign victims, in front of the Patriotic Union of Kuridstan's Office in the northern city of Suleimaniya 21 August 2006. The much-awaited trial of ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein for genocide following the slaughter of some 100,000 Kurds will begin today, reviving bitter memories among the country's Kurdish minority. Saddam's second trial will see him and six co-defendants face a raft of charges related to the 1987-1988 so-called Anfal campaign by Iraqi forces, in which an estimated 3,000 villages in the Kurdish region were also razed to the ground.
