IRAQ-TRIAL-SADDAM-KURDS
Iraqi Kurds chat as they sit along a road in Baghdad's poor neighborhood of Sadr City 21 August 2006. The much-awaited trial of ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein for genocide following the slaughter of some 100,000 Kurds began today, reviving bitter memories among the country's Kurdish minority. Saddam's second trial will see him and six co-defendants face a raft of charges related to the 1987-1988 so-called Anfal campaign by Iraqi forces, in which an estimated 3,000 villages in the Kurdish region were also razed to the ground.
