CHILE-STRIKE-ESCONDIDA MINE
A worker of Minera Escondida mine shouts slogans in front of a barricade made out of burning tires blocking the road, during a protest 21 August, 2006 in Antofagasta, northern Chile. Unionized workers at Minera Escondida, the world's largest copper mine, continued their strike Monday after rejecting a settlement offer from the site's majority owners, Anglo-Australian mining giant BHP Billiton. The strikers overwhelmingly rejected the offer in a hand vote late Sunday. The mine's 2,052 unionized workers, representing 97 percent of the workforce, went on strike on August 7 over a wage disput.
