US-POVERTY-HOMELESSNESS
TO GO WITH STORY BY RANDY NIEVES
Poncho (R), a homeless woman, gives out information to people wanting to help out in a vacant lot in Miami's Liberty City neighborhood 26 October 2006. A couple dozen activists and homeless people set up tents and built shelters out of wood pallets in a city-owned vacant lot in an effort to house neighborhood homeless people and to alleviate what organizers called lack of interest by the city in housing poor black people. Volunteers and well wishers from the neighborhood have donated money, food, clothing and time to help out in the project. According to figures by the US Census Bureau 37 million people lived in poverty in 2005. AFP PHOTO/Roberto SCHMIDT
