CZECH-SLOVAKIA-HUNGARY-EU-FARM-SUGAR-TRADE
Around 100 Czech sugar beet growers protest outside the German and British embassies (out of camera range), 22 November 2006 in Prague against plans by Anglo-German owned sugar refining giant, Eastern Sugar to close its Central European plants. "We went into the EU to be farmers, not beggars," proclaimed one banner. "Today sugar, Tomorrow milk, What will Europe steal later ?," added another. The Czech sugar beet growers say Eastern Sugar's closure plans will at one sweep cut 22.5 percent of the Czech Republic's EU-set sugar production quota. About 20 percent of the 900 Czech sugar beet growers fear they would lose their market. AFP PHOTO MICHAL CIZEK
