FILES-RUSSIA-HEAT-ZOO
(FILES) A polar bear cub cools himself on an artificial snow as another one looks at him at a zoo in Moscow, where temperatures reached over 32 degrees Celsius 23 June 2006. The United States 27 December, 2006 proposed listing polar bears as threatened, marking the first time the Bush administration has singled out climate change as the potential driving force behind the demise of a species. There are between 20,000 and 25,000 polar bears worldwide, 4,700 of which live in Alaska, and environmental groups for years have raised the alarm about their possible extinction because of global warming.
