FILES-RUSSIA-HEAT-ZOO
A polar bear cub digs a snow burrow as another one passes by him, as temperatures soared over 32 degrees Celsius, in Moscow's zoo, 23 June 2006. The United States on 27 December, 2006 proposed listing polar bears as threatened, marking the first time the Bush administration has singled out climate change as the potential driving force behind the demise of a species. There are between 20,000 and 25,000 polar bears worldwide, 4,700 of which live in Alaska, and environmental groups for years have raised the alarm about their possible extinction because of global warming.
