Residents of the Alemao shantytown wait on a street to return home, 27 June 2007, 35 km north of Rio de Janeiro. At least 18 people died Wednesday in firefights between Brazilian police and drug dealers in Rio de Janeiro's notorious slums, state public safety secretary Jose Mariano Beltrame said. Police launched a huge sweep, with 1,350 officers surrounding slums to rid them of violent drug traffickers and seize weapons and drugs, according to local media reports. AFP PHOTO ANTONIO SCORZA
