Armed forces chief General Hermogenes Esperon speaks during press conference in Manila 12 July 2007. Esperon ordered that a military contingent be deployed in the area to prevent some people from escaping while investigation on the clash between the military and Islamic militants. The troops were searching for the kidnapped Italian priest Giancarlo Bossi in the island when they were ambushed by a joint group of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, and the Al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf. Fourteen soldiers were killed and 10 were beheaded. President Gloria Arroyo said the armed forces are duty bound to hunt down and arrest those who treacherously killed and beheaded the soldiers.
