PHILIPPINES-ITALY-KIDNAP-UNREST-CLASH
From right chief adviser on the peace talks, Jesus Dureza, Defence Secretary Norberto Gonzales and armed forces chief General Hermogenes Esperon attend a press conference in Manila 12 July 2007. Dureza said an international team of monitors from Malaysia, Libya and Brunei were on the ground in southern Basilan island carrying out an investigation on the clash between the military and Islamic militants, as both sides moved to prevent an escalation of violence. The troops were searching for the kidnapped Italian priest Giancarlo Bossi in the island when they were ambushed by a joint group of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, and the Al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf. Fourteen soldiers were killed and 10 were beheaded. President Gloria Arroyo said the armed forces are duty bound to hunt down and arrest those who treacherously killed and beheaded the soldiers.
