US-BADWATER-ULTRAMARATHON
German couple Dagmar Grossheim (L) and Achim Heukemes kiss on the salt flats at the bottom of Death Valley at the Badwater Basin before the start of the 135-mile (217km) Kiehl's Badwater Ultramarathon, 23 July 2007 in Death Valley National Park in southeastern California. Both Grossheim and Heukemes are competing in the race, each at their own pace. Badwater, at 282 feet (86 meters) below sea level, is the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere and is the starting point for the ultramarathon which finishes at an elevation of 8360 feet (2548 meters) at the Mt.
