IRAQ-SPAIN-TROOPS
Spanish soldiers browse the internet and chat with their relatives at the library of their base in the southern city of Diwaniya, 180 kms from Baghdad, 16 March 2004. Spanish Prime Minister-elect Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero vowed after his Socialist Party (PSOE) won a resounding general election victory to bring Spain-s 1,300 soldiers home before June 30 unless a United Nations force was deployed in Iraq. Spain-s contingent with the US-led forces occuyping Iraq is the sixth largest, making up the bulk of a battalion of Spanish-speaking troops based in a Shiite-dominated region south of Baghdad.
