A Spanish soldier patrols in the southern city of Diwaniya, 180 kms from Baghdad, 16 March 2004. Spanish Prime Minister-elect Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero vowed after his Socialist Party (PSOE) won a resounding general election victory to bring Spain-s 1,300 soldiers home before June 30 unless a United Nations force was deployed in Iraq. Spain-s contingent with the US-led forces occuyping Iraq is the sixth largest, making up the bulk of a battalion of Spanish-speaking troops based in a Shiite-dominated region south of Baghdad.
