IRAQ-UNREST-KURDS-ANFAL-REMAINS
Kurdish Peshmerga security forces parade past the coffins, draped in Kurdish flags, of 371 victims of Saddam Hussein's genocide campaign during a ceremony before their reburial in Arbil, capital of Iraq's autonomous Kurdish region, 14 January 2008. Kurdish leaders demanded at the ceremony redress from the Iraqi government while families of the dead urged that those responsible be hanged. The coffins contained the remains of victims of the brutal 1988 "Anfal" (Spoils of War) campaign carried out by Saddam's forces in which an estimated 182,000 ethnic Kurds are estimated to have died. The 371 bodies had been found in four mass graves in southern and northern Iraq. AFP PHOTO/SAFIN HAMED
