IRAQ-UNREST-KURDS-ANFAL-REMAINS
A Kurdish Iraqi woman kisses the coffin of a loved one as the remains of 371 victims of Saddam Hussein's genocide campaign were laid to rest after a ceremony held 14 January 2008 in Arbil, capital of Iraq's autonomous Kurdish region. Kurdish leaders demanded at the ceremony redress from the Iraqi government while families of the dead urged that those responsible be hanged. The coffins contained the remains of victims of the brutal 1988 "Anfal" (Spoils of War) campaign carried out by Saddam's forces in which an estimated 182,000 ethnic Kurds are estimated to have died. The 371 bodies had been found in four mass graves in southern and northern Iraq. AFP PHOTO/SAFIN HAMED
