NORWAY-ARCTIC-POLAR-BEAR
TO GO WITH AFP STORY by Pierre-Henry Deshayes "Norvège-Arctique-société-animaux-ours"
An armed constuction worker keeps watch for polar bears outside the entrance of the Global Seed Vault, on February 24, 2008 in Longyearbyen. Rifels are quite common on the Norwegian archipelago Spitsbergen to use as a protection against polar bears.
In the Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic there are more polar bears than people, and while the two species live side-by-side in peace most of the time there are occasionally fatal encounters. A road sign warning people to "Beware of the Bears" is probably the world's only public road sign reminding visitors of the dangers the animals present. AFP PHOTO / DANIEL SANNUM LAUTEN
