Chief of the intensive care unit of the Pierre Zobda-Quitman hospital in Fort-de-France, Hossein Mendaoui (L), gives a press conference, on April 17, 2008 in the Caribbean island of Martinique, after French poet Aime Cesaire, an energetic promoter of black cultural identity, 94, died today. Cesaire died in that hospital where he had been admitted on April 9. With fellow writers such as Leopold Sedar Senghor from Senegal, Cesaire invented the term "negritude" which he defined as an "affirmation that one is black and proud of it. AFP PHOTO FRANCK FIFE
