The Ford Motor Company on 21 April 2004, reported stronger-than-expected first-quarter earnings that doubled last year-s profit and hiked its full-year profit target. "This is the best quarter we have achieved since we began our back-to-basics efforts more than two years ago, and it clearly demonstrates our plan is working and building momentum," said chairman Bill Ford in a statement. First-quarter net earnings during the quarter came to 1.95 billion USD, or 94 cents a share, twice as much as the company earned in the first quarter last year (896 million USD/45 cents), as rebounding auto operations and its finance operations bolstered the bottom line.AFP Photo/Jeff KOWALSKY
