MIDEAST-ISRAEL-PALESTINIAN-SETTLERS
An Israeli soldiers guards an alley in Hebron's Palestinian quarter as a group of Jewish settlers visit the Old City for prayers on October 7, 2008, ahead of the Day of Atonement or Yom Kippur. Several hundred Jewish settlers live in an enclave in the divided West Bank city, protected by the Israeli army, amid 150,000 Palestinians. Yom Kippur, the most solemn day in the Jewish calendar, is a 25-hour period of fasting and intense reflection and prayers where the central theme is atonment that begins tomorrow after sunset.
