NETHERLANDS-DRUGS-CANNABIS-MAYORS
(L to R) Dutch mayors, Job Cohen of Amsterdam, Gerd Leers of Maastricht and Thom de Graaf of Nijmegen chat after a private meeting in Almere to discuss a new soft-drugs policy, on November 21 2008. Amsterdam is to order the closure of dozens of coffee shops that sell cannabis near schools in accordance with new legislation, the municipality said Friday. In 1976, the Netherlands decriminalised the consumption of cannabis, and the possession of less than five grams. Its cultivation and wholesale remains prohibited.
