NETHERLANDS-DRUGS-CANNABIS-MAYORS
Dutch mayors, Job Cohen of Amsterdam (L) and Gerd Leers of Maastricht (C) answer media questions after a private meeting in Almere to discuss a new soft-drugs policy, on November 21, 2008. Amsterdam is to order the closure of dozens of coffee shops that sell cannabis near schools in accordance with new legislation, the municipality said Friday. In 1976, the Netherlands decriminalised the consumption of cannabis, and the possession of less than five grams. Its cultivation and wholesale remains prohibited.
