INDIA-CONGRESS-GANDHI-RESIGN-ACTIVISTS-ANGER

Angry Indian Congress Party activists lie on the ground after attempting to storm a press conference held by Congress spokespersons Ambika Soni and Jaipal Reddy announcing that the leadership of the party has resigned in an attempt to pressure party president Sonia Gandhi to take the post of prime minister, in New Delhi, 19 May 2004. The activists surrounded the venue breaking windows before to be restrained by police. Gandhi turned down the post of prime minister on 18 May, saying she feared a backlash from Hindu hardliners and has since been under pressure by her own party members to revert her decision.
