INDIA-CONGRESS-GANDHI-RESIGN-ACTIVISTS-ANGER
Indian police officers prevent angry Congress Party activists as they attempt to storm a press conference held by Congress spokespersons Ambika Soni and Jaipal Reddy announcing that the leadership of the party has resigned in an attempt to pressure party president Sonia Gandhi to take the post of prime minister, in New Delhi, 19 May 2004. The activists surrounded the venue breaking windows before being restrained by police. Gandhi turned down the post of prime minister on 18 May, saying she feared a backlash from Hindu hardliners and has been under pressure by her own party members to revert her decision.
