US-JAIL DEATHS
Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca talks with reporters as he leads a tour inside the Men-s Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles, 19 May 2004. Facing criticism over a spate of deaths in the country-s largest jail, Baca opened up the facility to the media in an effort to stem complaints that the jail was not secure. The latest killing was last month, when authorities say a murder suspect managed to roam the jail freely for hours before strangling a fellow inmate who testified against him.
